Jeffrey Olick
Politicians and commentators frequently frame contemporary events by analogies to the past: Waterloo, Munich, Hitler, the Great Depression, etc. Historians, by contrast, often show why such analogies are misleading, how the politicians got it wrong, while sociologists try to discover the hidden interests behind the analogy - what the politicians were trying to accomplish with it - and hence to discredit it. But analogies, philosophers have shown, are never completely right or completely wrong; no two events are exactly the same, nor are any two that involve humans completely distinct, which is why teachers always ask their students to compare and contrast. How, then, are we, the critical public, to make sense of the use of historical analogies in public? Factual criticism and discovery of intentions are indeed important, but they are not nearly enough. In this lecture, I outline a number of different dimensions that critical publics must bring to their reception of historical analogies. Based on recent work in the emerging field of memory studies, I explore the role of fantasy, emotion and aesthetics in the deployment, and hence reaction to, historical analogies in public discourse.Professor Jeffrey Olick (University of Virginia) was invited to Swinburne under the Board of Research Visiting Professor Grant Scheme, and this lecture was presented as part of the PVC(R) Visiting Professor Lecture Series.

The ridge at the end of the world: Flanders, 1917, as an Australian disaster (ISR Lunchtime Seminar Series)
Richard Evans
The Australian memory of the First World War is dominated by Gallipoli. By comparison, the two great military disasters of the 1917 Flanders campaign, and the three even bloodier "victories" in between, are familiar only to military history buffs - and even they don't really understand their significance. In the book I am writing about disasters in Australian history, I will explore the 1917 Flanders offensive, the peculiar combination of memory and denial which surround it, and the effects of these on Australian society. This seminar presented as part of the Institute for Social Research lunchtime seminar series for 2009.

Swinburne Archives
Mr. Tylee died in 1966 during his seventeenth year as Director of Swinburne."Mr. A. F. Tylee, who died recently during his seventeenth year as Director of Swinburne, was a man of wide interests. A civil engineer by profession, he was equally interested in the physical sciences, the social sciences and the arts.
He travelled extensively throughout Australia, and wrote articles on Australian history and geography for many newspapers and journals. He was closely in touch with developments in Australian educational administration, both tertiary and sub-tertiary, and had written articles on education and taken part in educational conferences. Not long before his death he was elected as a Fellow of the Australian College of Education, a body of leading educationists. At Swinburne, he was a unifying influence on the college, and was concerned to foster the development of all branches of learning. When Social Science was introduced into technical diploma courses several years ago, Mr. Tylee established the "A. F. Tylee Prize in Social Science" which he donated annually to the best student in social science classes. At the time of his death he was giving thought to the possible establishment of a full-length Diploma of Humanities (or Liberal Arts) at the College. Mr. Tylee was also interested in the fine arts, and he frequently spent an afternoon painting in a studio at our Art School. It was there that he posed a couple of years ago for a portrait by Mr. A. Moore, of the Art School staff."
